SIGMED RO-UA II – Patient safety in surgical procedures and transfusions

This project steppes-up co-operation between hospitals and health care professionals in the RO-UA cross-border region addressing the territorial challenge of inequity in people’s access to safe and high quality healthcare services. The main objective of the project is to increase the capacity of 5 urban / municipal hospitals along the RO-UA border to ensure patient safety tackling joint challenges of the most prevalent clinical processes involving the highest risks such as blood transfusions, surgical processes, anesthesia and intensive therapy in the fields of general surgery, orthopaedics-traumatology, and obstetrics-gynecology. In order to reduce avoidable harm to patient within hospitals, it is crucial to develop the safety culture, which encourages the communication of adverse events, enabling the development of strategies to solve problems in a patient-focused way. Joint training programs, construction of harmonized medical protocols, endowment of local hospitals with high performance equipment and cross border institutional co-operations are foreseen to improve health conditions of citizens in this region. This project increases hospitals capacity to reduce morbidity and mortality by setting-up necessary means to avoid unnecessary transfusion, to better identify risks, to analyse the causes and develop efficient and effective strategies to mitigate risks based on internationally recognized solutions.The project establishes joint professional groupings that will adapt innovative methods to the regional needs and constraints, leading to harmonization of health care protocols, improving health state of population and increase fair access for citizens to cost-effective health services. It contributes to the development of accessibility of good quality health services across the eligible area by transferring the results and outcomes to stakeholders in the region and promoting integration of patient safety into the mainstream patient care activity of the hospitals.
